LOS ANGELES

LOS ANGELES FOOD TOUR

Exploring America’s Culinary Frontier

2-7 people

Chinatown -> Jewelry District

~5-6 hours

10:45am
Tuesday –Saturday

Quick Bite: Our 5 ½-hour Los Angeles food tour explores the extreme culinary diversity and ingenuity of LA’s oldest neighborhoods, out of which a staggeringly enormous and magical city has developed.

Nobody walks in LA? Prepare to challenge your expectations and preconceptions as we wind our way through Downtown Los Angeles on foot. The City of Angels is vast and sprawling, to be sure, a world city and global hub that boasts the busiest port in the western hemisphere and a local economy rivaled only by New York and Tokyo. Yet strolling through its dense core, where it all began hundreds of years ago alongside the LA River, Los Angeles still feels like a western outpost – forward looking, experimental, and adventuresome, especially when it comes to eating.

Our food journey is a taste of the banquet laid out for the bold, the curious, and the intrepid as they explore the seemingly boundaryless City of Angels.

We’ll begin our day in on this Los Angeles food tour in LA’s atmospheric Chinatown, which is experiencing a culinary renaissance. Here we’ll first sit down at a new spot – at once both modern and traditional – for a reinvented tea ceremony, followed by a taste of some of the most innovative tacos around. After a few other delectable stops in Chinatown, we’ll rummage through a tiny Vietnamese bodega to find LA’s preeminently delicious Báhn Mì and continue our walk down storied Olvera Street, stopping for taquitos at the spot where they were invented, before checking out Union Station and Pueblo de Los Angeles, including Avila Adobe, built in 1818 – the oldest existing residence in Los Angeles.

Traversing the Hollywood Freeway, we’ll stop to discuss how cars and then later freeways transformed Los Angeles into the postmodern paradise it is today before we make our way into the pedestrian-friendly backstreets of Little Tokyo to sample some of the most authentic – and delicious – Japanese food in America, from exquisite sushi to artisanal mochi. Walking down Broadway we’ll marvel at example after example of the city’s most impressive architecture and sample some of the best bites to be found inside LA’s oldest food market. All along the way we’ll stop for other surprises, both edible and cultural.

LOS ANGELES CITY GUIDE

In a metropolis encompassing 88 cities and a near infinite number of neighborhoods, the culinary tapestry of Los Angeles is united by more treasures, currents and paradoxes than the city has freeway exits. It is an ever-fluctuating ecosystem sustained by immigrant enclaves offering genuine tastes of the home cooking and celebratory feasts they feel homesick for. It’s where first-generation sons and daughters aren’t afraid to shatter all the rules.

Our food journey may seem extensive, but it’s truly only a taste of the banquet laid out for the bold, the curious, and the intrepid as they continue to explore the seemingly boundaryless City of Angels.Introducing our pocket-sized Los Angeles guide — perfect for your next culinary adventure. Yours free when you sign up for our newsletter. From celebrity chefs to timeless burger joints, lively Los Angeles has a wide range of dishes to impress you. It’s hard to name on best food in Los Angeles, because the city is home to a huge number of cuisines and communities that have made an impact on restaurant tables. From Mexican tacos and birria to Korean kimchi and bulgogi, you’ll find everything East to West.

Title: Dive into the Heart of LA with Chris Pine's New Film "POOLMAN"

Chris Pine, best known for his captivating performances in Hollywood blockbusters, is making waves with his latest project, "POOLMAN." Set against the backdrop of Los Angeles, this film offers a fresh perspective on the city's vibrant spirit and the everyday heroes who call it home.

"POOLMAN" follows the journey of Darren Barrenman, played by Pine himself, a native Angeleno who spends his days tending to the pools of the Tahitian Tiki apartment block. But Darren's role as a pool man transcends mere maintenance; he becomes a symbol of resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

As Darren navigates the complexities of his community, he uncovers a web of corruption and greed threatening to engulf his beloved city. Teaming up with a cast of colorful characters, Darren embarks on a quest to uncover the truth and fight for justice.

What sets "POOLMAN" apart is its exploration of the soul of Los Angeles. Beyond the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, the film delves into the diverse neighborhoods and communities that make up the fabric of the city. From the bustling streets of downtown to the sun-drenched suburbs, each location serves as a backdrop for Darren's journey, reflecting the richness and diversity of LA's cultural landscape.

But "POOLMAN" isn't just about the city—it's about the people who inhabit it. Pine's portrayal of Darren Barrenman is a testament to the resilience and spirit of everyday heroes who work tirelessly to make a difference in their communities. Through Darren's eyes, audiences are invited to see LA in a new light, as a place where ordinary individuals can rise up to confront extraordinary challenges.

With its captivating storyline, compelling characters, and stunning cinematography, "POOLMAN" is poised to make a splash in the world of cinema. As Pine himself puts it, "This film is a love letter to the city of Los Angeles and the people who call it home. **The Vibrant Tapestry of the Sunset Strip: A Deeper Dive into its Rich History and Modern Marvels**

Nestled in the heart of Los Angeles, the Sunset Strip stands as a living testament to the city's dynamic history, from its early days as a mere dirt road to the iconic cultural hub it has become today. Let's embark on a journey through time, exploring the layers of stories that have woven this legendary stretch of Sunset Boulevard into the fabric of Los Angeles.

*Unveiling the Origins: Victor Ponet and the Birth of the Sunset Strip*

In the late 19th century, Belgian businessman and diplomat Victor Ponet acquired 240 acres of the Rancho La Brea, setting the stage for the emergence of the Sunset Strip. As Hollywood began to take its form nearby, Ponet cleared a path in 1904, creating a dirt road connecting the fields. This road, later extended as Sunset Boulevard, marked the birth of the Sunset Strip.

Daeida Wilcox, often hailed as the 'mother of Hollywood,' supposedly named the boulevard to attract potential homebuyers. The Strip, evolving from poinsettia fields, gradually transformed into a cultural hotspot, setting the scene for a captivating saga that unfolded over the decades.

*Infamy and Glory: The Early Years of the Sunset Strip*

As the 20th century dawned, the Strip became a magnet for the criminal underworld, thriving in its unincorporated status, beyond the immediate reach of law enforcement. Jack Dragna, a local mob boss from Sicily, orchestrated a web of illicit activities, including gambling dens, speakeasies, and brothels, capitalizing on the proximity to Hollywood and Beverly Hills.

The 1930s ushered in a new chapter with the opening of Schwab's Pharmacy, becoming an unofficial writers' room and earning a place in the noir classic, Sunset Boulevard. Opposite Schwab's stood the legendary Garden of Allah hotel, hosting luminaries like Errol Flynn and F. Scott Fitzgerald. The Strip's allure extended beyond the shadows, attracting stars like Judy Garland, Humphrey Bogart, and Marilyn Monroe to clubs like Trocadero, Mocambo, and Ciro's.

*Enter Bugsy Siegel: The Mob's West Coast Foray*

In 1937, the East Coast crime syndicate, 'the Commission,' sought a foothold on the West Coast, dispatching Benjamin 'Bugsy' Siegel. His flamboyant persona and ties to Hollywood's elite propelled him to infamy, intertwining the Strip with organized crime. Collaborating with Mickey Cohen, Siegel orchestrated a reign of extortion, from unpaid loans to Hollywood studios, solidifying his control.

The late 1940s marked a shift as LAPD's William Parker cracked down on organized crime, prompting Siegel's move to Las Vegas. His vision for the Flamingo Hotel, however, met a tragic end with his assassination in 1947, leaving Cohen to navigate the changing landscape.

*Resurgence and Rebellion: The Sunset Strip's Evolution*

By the late 1950s, the allure of Las Vegas lured away most nightclubs and entertainers, leaving the Sunset Strip in a state of dormancy. The mid-1960s ushered in a new era with the arrival of the Laurel Canyon rock scene, featuring icons like Bob Dylan, The Byrds, and the Beach Boys. Pandora's Box and Whisky a Go Go became focal points, sparking the Sunset Strip Curfew Riots in 1966, a turning point in its cultural narrative.

*The Musical Odyssey: From Heavy Metal to Punk and Beyond*

The 1980s and 90s witnessed a revival, with venues like the Rainbow Bar and Grill hosting legends from Led Zeppelin to Guns N' Roses. The Viper Room, founded in 1993, became a symbol of the Strip's enduring spirit, attracting celebrities like Johnny Depp. Yet, transformations loomed as West Hollywood incorporated in 1984, paving the way for corporate logos and luxury housing.

*The Sunset Strip Today: A Tapestry of Legacy and Change*

In the 21st century, Starbucks often replaces the star-studded hangouts, and relics like the Garden of Allah have vanished. Joni Mitchell's lament, "they paved paradise to put up a parking lot," echoes the changing landscape. However, echoes of its storied past persist in landmarks like Chateau Marmont, Sunset Tower, and the Comedy Store.

*Exploration Beckons: Recommendations for Your Sunset Strip Sojourn*

1. **Chateau Marmont:** A bastion of privacy since 1929, the Chateau Marmont invites you into its mysterious ambiance, where Hollywood elite once sought refuge.

2. **Sunset Tower:** Dive into history at the Sunset Tower Hotel's bar, once Bugsy Siegel's apartment, where tales of John Wayne's unconventional antics linger.

While most of our tours explore the exterior of buildings, we do venture inside some places, including bars and restaurants. Our itineraries are crafted to provide a comprehensive experience, and we have detailed descriptions, videos, and photos available for each tour on our website.

In the United States, it's customary to tip your guide if you enjoyed the tour and believe they did a good job. Standard tipping ranges from 15-20%. For guidance on when and how much to tip, refer to our helpful guide to tipping in the U.S.

**Exploring the Hispanic Heritage of Los Angeles: Pio Pico and Dolores del Rio**

The impact of people from the Spanish-speaking countries of Central and South America on Los Angeles has been profound. With nearly half of the city's population having Hispanic roots, the Latino community forms the largest ethnic share in Los Angeles. This influence is deeply rooted in the city's history, stemming from significant immigration over the past century from Central and South America. However, the roots of Latino culture in Los Angeles extend even further back, with California being part of the Spanish Empire and, after gaining independence, Mexico.

In the U.S., the terms Hispanic, Latino, and Spanish are sometimes confused, despite having distinct meanings. Hispanic refers to Spanish-speaking individuals, including those from Spain but not Brazil. Latino generally encompasses people from Latin American countries, excluding Spain. If someone identifies as Spanish, it means they are from Spain and not any other country.

During Hispanic Heritage Month, it's fitting to explore the stories of two legendary Latinos often mentioned on tours for their significant impact on Los Angeles: Pio Pico and Dolores del Rio.

**Pio Pico: A Californio Legacy**

Born in 1801 at the San Gabriel Mission, Pio Pico was a first-generation Californio, belonging to Mexican, First American, African, and Spanish ancestry. His early investments in San Diego's general store led to substantial wealth, making him one of the prominent rancheros during the Age of the Dons. Pico became the interim governor of Alta California in 1832 and later served as the governor again in 1845, during the Mexican-American War.

His influence extended to vast ranches in Southern California, amassing over 500,000 acres of land. Pico's financial peak saw him construct the iconic Pico House in 1869, the largest building in Los Angeles at the time. However, his later years were marked by financial setbacks, and he passed away in relative poverty in 1894. Pico's contributions are commemorated in various landmarks, including Pico Boulevard and Pio Pico State Historic Park.

**Dolores del Rio: Hollywood's Silent Star**

Dolores del Rio, born in Mexico City in 1904, transitioned from a promising dance career to Hollywood stardom in the 1920s. Renowned for her beauty and acting talent, del Rio quickly rose to fame with hits like "Ramona" and "What Price Glory?" She became one of the biggest stars in Hollywood during the early 1930s, working alongside notable figures like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

In 1940, del Rio met and began a passionate affair with Orson Welles during the production of "Citizen Kane." Their relationship, marked by intense emotions, eventually led to the end of her marriage to Cedric Gibbons. Del Rio played a crucial role in Welles' life during the making of his masterpiece.

As Hollywood roles diminished for del Rio in the 1940s, she returned to Mexico, contributing to the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema with films like "Maria Candelaria." Del Rio continued to alternate between projects in Mexico and Los Angeles, leaving a lasting legacy for future crossover stars like Rita Moreno and Jennifer Lopez.

Dolores del Rio passed away in 1983, and her contributions are commemorated with a beautiful mural in Hollywood, celebrating her diverse filmography. Standing before the mural, one can reflect on the remarkable journey of Dolores del Rio and the enduring impact of Latinos on the cultural tapestry of Los Angeles.

Yes! We're very happy to offer tours in Spanish and German. However please note that we ONLY organize tours in other languages as private tours, all of our regular group tours are in English. Please contact us at info@thereallosangelestours.com to schedule a private tour in the language of your choice.

CAN I BRING MY CHILDREN ON A TOUR?

Absolutely, we love kids. Just remember, though, that we can’t change the content of any of our group tours to suit your children.

CAN I BOOK A PRIVATE TOUR FOR STUDENTS FROM A SCHOOL?

We can accommodate High School students (i.e. 15+ y.o.) and we’re proud to have organized dozens of tours for school groups. Please check our Private Tours page for more info. For university students you can book any private tour, without needing to check with us.

IS MY TOUR CANCELED IF IT’S RAINING / VERY HOT?

We NEVER cancel a tour in advance due to the weather. If it’s raining bring an umbrella. If it’s hot bring water and sun block. You’ve only got a few days to experience Los Angeles – you’re not going to let the weather stop you, are you?

CAN YOU PICK ME UP FROM MY HOTEL / THE AIRPORT / MY AIRBNB APARTMENT ETC?

No, we're not that kind of tour company.

WHERE’S THE BEST PLACE TO PARK FOR MY TOUR?

For a city built around the personal motor vehicle there is, as you’d expect, a lot of parking. Prices vary, often hour by hour, and filming units can suddenly take over whole parking lots, so we're unable to help you find parking unfortunately. Check this website for up to date info, but remember to allow PLENTY of time to find parking AND to walk from your car to the tour meeting point.

There is another option though, all of our tours start and end near a Metro station or bus stop. so take the Los Angeles Metro; it’s clean, mostly reliable and very affordable. Use this helpful trip planner or read our guide to using public transport in Los Angeles for more information.

Or you could use a ride sharing service (like Uber or Lyft), it’s often cheaper than paying for parking anyway (and certainly cheaper than a parking ticket). If roaming isn’t permitted with your cell phone plan you can always use the wifi service at the neighborhood coffee shop. If you don’t have the app consider downloading it. Uber and Lyft operate in many countries around the world and if you travel even a little you’ll find other opportunities to use their services.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I’M RUNNING LATE FOR MY TOUR?

Los Angeles is big, traffic is bad, stoppages on the LA Metro do occur and other events are always happening. The best way to avoid being late for the tour is to allow PLENTY of time to get to there. Our guides are at the meeting point, checking-in guests, from fifteen minutes before each tour begins. Your time is valuable to us, that’s why our tours start on schedule.

Once they’ve left the meeting point there’s no opportunity to join the group. Our office is unable to guide guests to the meeting point, by phone or email, and we can’t contact the guide – they’re doing the tour. We operate several tours a day, in various locations, with up to a hundred guests. It’s impossible, for any tour company, to make team members available throughout the day to respond to urgent direction requests.

We’ve organized an amazing experience for you, the guide is at the meeting point and you have all the info you need to find them. Please don’t miss out because you didn’t allow enough time to get there or you didn't follow our directions.

CAN I GET THE GUIDE TO CHANGE THE TOUR CONTENT / ITINERARY TO SUIT ME AND MY INTERESTS?

Unfortunately, no. Our tours are designed by us to suit a wide range of people who are interested in history, culture and architecture and guides are extensively trained on them. It’s impossible, at short notice, to change a tour based on what any guest requests at that moment.

Nevertheless all our guides are very knowledgable and passionate about Los Angeles, so you’re more than welcome to ask them all the questions you like, on any topic that interest you, during your tour. We love questions!

DO YOU JUST TALK ABOUT BUILDINGS FROM THE OUTSIDE / DO YOU GO INSIDE ANY BUILDINGS?

Firstly, there's nothing wrong with talking about buildings from the outside. 95% of tour companies don't go inside any places – stars houses tours don't go into the stars' houses and bus tours drive through the streets, after all. In order to fit a good itinerary into a tour there isn't the time to go into tons of places, often there's nothing of special interest to see inside and walking the streets is an integral part of our experiences (like any tour).

Secondly, and having just said, that we DO go into quite a few places, including bars and restaurants, on our tours. Why not? Thirdly, we cannot give you any more info than is already here on the website, because that's how this thing works (we have short videos, detailed descriptions and numerous photos for every tour).

SHOULD I TIP MY GUIDE / HOW MUCH SHOULD I TIP MY GUIDE?

It’s customary in America to give a gratuity to the guide if you enjoyed the tour and you thought they did a good job (15-20% is standard). If you’re a little confused about why, when and how much to tip read our helpful guide to tipping in the U.S.

HAVE A QUESTION NOT ANSWERED IN OUR FAQS?

Write to us using the email address at the bottom of every page and we’ll get back to you within 48 hours with an answer. Please note though, that if it IS answered on this website (and it almost certainly is) then we WON'T be able to respond.

On our Hollywood walking tour we go back in time to before that name for the area was even used, then we’ll tell you how and why the start-up film industry first moved to this small, sleepy farming town in the early twentieth century.

By walking the streets of Hollywood you’ll get the chance to discover the many hidden historic sites on the boulevard (such as the oldest house in Hollywood, where Charlie Chaplin’s kids went to school), as well as offering you the best up close and personal experiences of such icons as the Walk of Fame, the Capitol Records Building, the Egyptian Theater, the Dolby Theater (home of the annual Oscars) and the TCL Chinese Theater where our Real Hollywood tour ends. It's the perfect place to have lunch or get some great shots of the Hollywood Sign for Instagram.

Combine this tour with our Central Downtown LA tour by booking both tours for the same day. Then the guide will take you from Hollywood to downtown, with travel on the Los Angeles Metro included. That way you can experience and learn about the two most historic parts of the city on one easy six hour tour.

When you decided to visit Los Angeles, probably at the top of your list of things to do here was checking out the beaches. But how are you going to do it? Why not let us do the work by joining our Santa Monica and Venice Bike Tour, letting you relax and enjoy the quintessential L.A. pastime, cycling the area on a Beach Cruiser. That way you can experience the famous boardwalk and canals, go to some hidden spots that only locals like us know of and learn about the history of the famous neighborhoods you’re passing through.

We’ll have your bicycles ready when you arrive for the Santa Monica and Venice Bike tour, then we’ll head down to the beach. The tour passes by famous Santa Monica Pier, before heading south towards Venice. We briefly stop on Venice Boardwalk, at Muscle Beach, and then continue past Venice Beach Pier to the beautiful canals. There’s a stop on hip Abbot Kinney Boulevard for juice or coffee (depends how healthy you want it to be!), before we head north up Main St, with its great collection of independent shops, cafes and bars, pausing to take in Santa Monica City Hall and the lovely Tongva Park. Your Santa Monica and Venice Bike Tour then ends back in the heart of Santa Monica, the perfect place to eat or head into downtown (via the Metro station) – or go to the beach.

What makes the LA: Food + History + Design tour different from other LA food tours? There are no cupcakes – we give you "real" food and tell you real history.

Food: From French newcomers in the nineteenth century, to Italian immigrants of the early twentieth century, to successive waves of migration from China, Vietnam and Thailand in the last fifty years, each culture has left its mark on Los Angeles' culinary landscape. And we haven’t even mentioned Latin America or Japan yet! On this LA food tour you’ll eat some of the best food in the city.

History: Los Angeles has a fascinating story too. Many of its oldest buildings, from when the tiny pueblo was infamous for being the most lawless and violent town in the Wild West, are still standing and you’ll even go inside one on this tour. Thought LA was just movie stars, beaches and Beverly Hills? Think again, we have a rich history going back to 1781.

Design: DTLA has some of the most iconic buildings in the world – City Hall, the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Eastern Columbia Building to name just three. On this tour you’ll also experience some beautiful interior spaces, from the Bradbury Building, to Union Station to the Art Nouveau lobby of a 1913 hotel. For over a hundred years Los Angeles has been a design capital and you’ll see exactly why.

Join us on our LA food tour and TRULY experience the best of Los Angeles.

First we visit the Biltmore Hotel, the last place the tragic Black Dahlia, Elizabeth Short, was seen alive. Next we stop at Clifton’s and learn about the anti-corruption drive of its Christian founder (who had a few secrets of his own). After that we move to the dreaded Hotel Cecil, which has a hellish history of murders, suicides and killers (including the Night Stalker). From there our DTLA Murder Mystery Ghost tour moves to the once grand Alexandria Hotel, where Rudolph Valentino’s ghost still haunts his old penthouse, then the Barclay Hotel, home to two serial killers – and also the scene of some of their most brutal murders. We visit the site of the Chinatown Massacre of 1871 (still the largest mass lynching in US history), before the tour finishes at the Halls of Justice, the site of many dramatic trials, including those of Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel (twice) and the infamous Charles Manson. Join our DTLA Murder Mystery Ghost tour and have sleepless nights for weeks!

Our tours can sell out. If you can't make a booking email us at info@thereallosangelestours.com, telling us when you want to do the tour and how many guests are in your party, and if we can squeeze you in we’ll let you know.
