LOS ANGELES

LOS ANGELES FOOD TOUR

Exploring America’s Culinary Frontier

2-7 people

Chinatown -> Jewelry District

~5-6 hours

10:45am
Tuesday –Saturday

Quick Bite: Our 5 ½-hour Los Angeles food tour explores the extreme culinary diversity and ingenuity of LA’s oldest neighborhoods, out of which a staggeringly enormous and magical city has developed.

Nobody walks in LA? Prepare to challenge your expectations and preconceptions as we wind our way through Downtown Los Angeles on foot. The City of Angels is vast and sprawling, to be sure, a world city and global hub that boasts the busiest port in the western hemisphere and a local economy rivaled only by New York and Tokyo. Yet strolling through its dense core, where it all began hundreds of years ago alongside the LA River, Los Angeles still feels like a western outpost – forward looking, experimental, and adventuresome, especially when it comes to eating.

Our food journey is a taste of the banquet laid out for the bold, the curious, and the intrepid as they explore the seemingly boundaryless City of Angels.

We’ll begin our day in on this Los Angeles food tour in LA’s atmospheric Chinatown, which is experiencing a culinary renaissance. Here we’ll first sit down at a new spot – at once both modern and traditional – for a reinvented tea ceremony, followed by a taste of some of the most innovative tacos around. After a few other delectable stops in Chinatown, we’ll rummage through a tiny Vietnamese bodega to find LA’s preeminently delicious Báhn Mì and continue our walk down storied Olvera Street, stopping for taquitos at the spot where they were invented, before checking out Union Station and Pueblo de Los Angeles, including Avila Adobe, built in 1818 – the oldest existing residence in Los Angeles.

Traversing the Hollywood Freeway, we’ll stop to discuss how cars and then later freeways transformed Los Angeles into the postmodern paradise it is today before we make our way into the pedestrian-friendly backstreets of Little Tokyo to sample some of the most authentic – and delicious – Japanese food in America, from exquisite sushi to artisanal mochi. Walking down Broadway we’ll marvel at example after example of the city’s most impressive architecture and sample some of the best bites to be found inside LA’s oldest food market. All along the way we’ll stop for other surprises, both edible and cultural.

LOS ANGELES CITY GUIDE

In a metropolis encompassing 88 cities and a near infinite number of neighborhoods, the culinary tapestry of Los Angeles is united by more treasures, currents and paradoxes than the city has freeway exits. It is an ever-fluctuating ecosystem sustained by immigrant enclaves offering genuine tastes of the home cooking and celebratory feasts they feel homesick for. It’s where first-generation sons and daughters aren’t afraid to shatter all the rules.

Our food journey may seem extensive, but it’s truly only a taste of the banquet laid out for the bold, the curious, and the intrepid as they continue to explore the seemingly boundaryless City of Angels.Introducing our pocket-sized Los Angeles guide — perfect for your next culinary adventure. Yours free when you sign up for our newsletter. From celebrity chefs to timeless burger joints, lively Los Angeles has a wide range of dishes to impress you. It’s hard to name on best food in Los Angeles, because the city is home to a huge number of cuisines and communities that have made an impact on restaurant tables. From Mexican tacos and birria to Korean kimchi and bulgogi, you’ll find everything East to West.

Review of Half-Day Sightseeing Tour of the Best of Los Angeles

Reviewed August 9, 2022

This was a great tour for a first timer to LA. The tour hit up some key spots that I was interested in, Santa Monica Pier and the Griffith Observatory. Our tour guide/driver Jeff was awesome, very friendly and knowledgeable, he kept us all entertained with his jokes and playlist. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone that would like to see a little bit of everything that LA has to offer.

Climate and Environment: Understanding the Causes of LA's Devastating Fires

By Emily Guerin
Published Jan 13, 2025, 3:35 PM

Los Angeles is grappling with two of the most deadly wildfires in state history: the Palisades and Eaton Fires. As the investigation into their causes unfolds, many are wondering: what sparked these massive blazes, and how do experts figure out what caused a wildfire? LAist spoke to veteran wildfire investigators to explain the intricate process.

The Potential Causes: What We Know So Far

There’s growing attention around the possible causes of both fires. For the Palisades Fire, some reports suggest it could be a rekindling of a previous fire, potentially triggered by fireworks on New Year’s Eve. Meanwhile, investigators are focusing on electrical transmission lines near Eaton Canyon as a possible source of the Eaton Fire, with Southern California Edison denying responsibility. The company has yet to be officially blamed, although multiple lawsuits have already been filed.

Finding the Point of Origin

Determining the exact origin of a wildfire is a complex, time-consuming task. Investigators begin by pinpointing where the fire started, a process that can take days or even weeks, according to Ed Nordskog, a retired arson investigator with the LA County Sheriff’s Department. In wind-driven fires like the Palisades and Eaton blazes, this task is somewhat easier: “High winds push the fire away from its origin, leaving a 'black finger' of burnt ground pointing backwards. If you follow that, you can trace it to the source,” says Nordskog.

Determining the Cause

Once the origin is found, investigators set up a grid around the area, combing through it meticulously for clues. They use tools like magnifying glasses, binoculars, and even magnets to look for small but significant evidence, like tiny molten metal particles that may indicate power lines touching in high winds (which contributed to the 2017 Thomas Fire). They also examine whether the fire could have been caused by something like a cooking fire from a homeless encampment.

This process is detailed and painstaking. “We’re literally on our hands and knees, looking at things smaller than a fingernail,” says Nordskog. Investigators also canvas neighborhoods, speaking to hundreds of witnesses to collect any video or testimony that could shed light on the cause.

However, it’s crucial for investigators to remain impartial. “Expectation bias is the worst thing you can have,” says Tom Pierce, a longtime fire investigator. “You need to disregard rumors and stick to the facts.”

Assigning Responsibility

Once the origin and cause are determined, the next step is to figure out who is responsible. This process can involve subpoenaing records from utility companies, interviewing employees, and examining physical evidence. In cases where a power line is suspected, investigators may even remove and inspect the lines with electrical engineers.

The investigation can take months, sometimes even years, and may evolve into a criminal case. In California, fires caused by negligence can result in either arson charges or reckless burning charges. While arson is always a felony, reckless burning may be charged as either a misdemeanor or felony depending on the severity of the fire.

In 2023 alone, human activity sparked over 4,000 wildfires in Southern California.

Once the cause and responsibility are determined, lawsuits often follow, as insurers attempt to recoup damages and victims seek compensation. "Fire is money," says Nordskog, underscoring how financially significant these investigations can be.

Resources and Tips for Wildfire Preparedness

As investigations continue, it's essential to remain prepared for future wildfires. Here's what you need to know:

  • If You Have to Evacuate: Be ready with an emergency bag. Every minute counts, so make sure your evacuation plans are up to date.

  • Fire Season is Year-Round: Make your home defensible by clearing brush and securing fire-resistant materials.

  • Navigating Fire Conditions: High winds, power outages, and poor visibility can make driving dangerous during wildfires. Prepare by understanding how to safely navigate in these conditions.

  • Helping Fire Victims: If you want to help those affected, avoid the urge to volunteer directly on the ground. Instead, support official aid organizations and follow evacuation instructions.

  • Insurance Claims: Victims need to act quickly to start insurance claims and document damage.

Understanding the Bigger Picture

Wildfires are becoming more frequent and more intense, with climate change playing a significant role in their escalation. From the complex causes of individual fires to the broader environmental factors, understanding how we got here is key to protecting communities and preventing future disasters.
